IMPACT Navarro, Navarro Regional Hospital and Navarro College Police to Collect Unused Rx Drugs

Corsicana, Texas – The Navarro College Police Department, in partnership with the Navarro Regional Hospital, IMPACT Navarro and Drug Prevention Resources, will host a Rx Drug Take Back on April 30, 2011. Between 10:00am and 2:00pm, officers will be collecting unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications for appropriate disposal.

Medications will be accepted on the parking lot of the First Baptist Church, 510 West Collin.

The prescription take back is part of a national effort by the Drug Enforcement Agency to reduce the availability of unmonitored medications in home medicine cabinets. There is a rising trend of youth consuming prescription and over-the-counter medications in order to get a high, and home medicine cabinets are the number one source of access for these substances. Many residents do not know how to properly dispose of unused or expired medications, as they should not be thrown away or flushed into the water system.

To participate, please bring your unused prescription drugs to the Take It To The Box location. Pills and liquid medications will be accepted; however, we will not be able to accept inhalers or injection supplies. The drugs will be anonymously collected in DEA-provided containers and destroyed. Law enforcement personnel will be present throughout the event.

IMPACT Navarro and Drug Prevention Resources, Inc. are dedicated to preventing youth substance abuse through the innovative delivery of evidence-based strategies that empower youth, families and communities. IMPACT is an organization of community volunteers who work together to provide public education, law enforcement, and public policy strategies to prevent youth substance abuse and build communities that are safe, healthy and drug-free.
