Breathe Easier: When It’s Time to See a Pulmonologist

                      7/23/2026

MannMost of us don't think much about breathing until it becomes difficult. Whether it's climbing a flight of stairs, working in the yard, or simply getting through the day, healthy lungs are something we often take for granted. But when breathing problems persist, specialized care can make a significant difference.

Many lung conditions begin with symptoms that are easy to dismiss as "just getting older," seasonal allergies or lingering effects of a cold. However, persistent respiratory symptoms shouldn't be ignored.

You may benefit from seeing a pulmonologist if you:

                      • Have been diagnosed by your primary care provider with a chronic lung or airway condition
                      • Have a cough that lasts more than several weeks
                      • Experience ongoing shortness of breath during normal activities
                      • Whistling sounds when breathing or chest discomfort
                      • Experience frequent bronchitis, pneumonia or other respiratory infections
                      • Have abnormal findings on a chest X-ray or CT scan
                      • Snore heavily, stop breathing during sleep or wake feeling unrested

"Early evaluation and treatment can often help patients breathe easier, stay more active and improve their quality of life," says board-certified pulmonologist Amit Mann, M.D., an independent member of the medical staff at Navarro Regional Hospital "The sooner we identify what's causing respiratory symptoms, the sooner we can develop a treatment plan."

There are simple steps everyone can take to protect their respiratory health.

                      • Don't smoke, and if you do, it's never too late to quit. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable lung disease and lung cancer. Quitting at any age can improve lung function and reduce the risk of serious health problems.
                      • Avoid secondhand smoke. Even if you don't smoke, breathing in tobacco smoke from others can increase your risk of asthma, respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer. Creating smoke-free homes and vehicles helps protect everyone, especially children and older adults.
                      • Pay attention to air quality. Texas experiences days when pollen, ozone and wildfire smoke can affect outdoor air quality. On days with poor air quality, people with asthma, COPD or other lung conditions should limit prolonged outdoor activity, keep rescue inhalers nearby if prescribed, and consider exercising indoors. Use air purifiers throughout your home, and use high quality air filters if you have a central HVAC unit.
                      • Stay up to date on vaccinations. Annual flu vaccines and recommended pneumonia vaccinations can help reduce the risk of respiratory infections, particularly for older adults and those with chronic lung conditions.
                      • Keep moving. Regular physical activity strengthens the heart and lungs and supports overall respiratory health.

If you're experiencing ongoing breathing problems, start by talking with your primary care provider. If specialized evaluation is needed, a pulmonologist can help diagnose the cause, identify underlying conditions and recommend treatment options that can help you breathe easier and get back to doing the things you enjoy.
