Guided by Trust: A Couple’s Journey to Better Health with Their Primary Care Provider
8/21/2025
When Bill Crawford began facing a series of health challenges, his wife Pam devoted herself to his care—so much so that she overlooked her own. Then they met Hillary Harper, NPMSN, APRN, FNP-C, and found a care partner who noticed, listened, and acted—transforming their quality of life and paving the way for a future full of possibilities.
For Pam and Bill, healthcare used to mean quick check-ins and a list of instructions. Visits with Hillary were different. Pam left that first visit with a feeling of having found an advocate. Bill also felt a genuine connection in that Hillary understood his personality and shared his sense of humor.
As Bill faced health challenges, Pam’s focus naturally shifted away from her well-being. “When I first met Pam, I could see how deeply she was invested in Bill’s health—so much so that she wasn’t even considering her own. Women often step naturally into the caregiver role, and I’m grateful that God gave me the insight to recognize that in her, “ Hillary reflected. When Hillary suggested updated heart tests for Pam (tests Pam initially downplayed), her approach was caring and persistent. That gentle nudge prompted Pam to undergo new screenings, which revealed a dangerous blockage. Pam ended up having a stent placed to correct a 95% blockage in what is known as the “widow maker” artery.
After each visit, Hillary would outline a written plan, including discussed goals and next steps. “As a licensed clinical social worker, I’m used to doing that with others. It’s helpful to know what we discussed and what I need to do for better health,” shares Pam. This written approach also helped Bill, especially when appointments involved medication or lifestyle changes. It made recalling instructions and responsibilities easy.
Throughout their journey, Hillary’s impact resonated in big and small ways: asking questions rather than dictating, involving both Pam and Bill in decisions, and listening deeply. The result? Both Pam and Bill reengaged with life and health. Pam found her way back to regular exercise, walking four to five days a week and has adopted cleaner eating habits. Bill resumed golf twice a week. Together, they reconnected with their social life: traveling, going to karaoke, and being active in their church community. Pam, retired, returned to part-time clinical social work, saying “There is a need in our community, and I still have a lot to offer. I want to contribute as long as I can.”
The Crawfords’ story demonstrates the profound difference a primary care provider can make when there is a true partnership between patient and provider. They are leading longer, fuller lives because of Hillary’s support and encouragement.
